To put my new Omnipod 5 to the test, I decided to treat myself to dinner at my favourite local pub. Scampi and chips, accompanied by three pints of Beavertown Neck Oil, provided the perfect opportunity to gauge how the pump would handle the intricacies of my blood sugar management!
After an enjoyable evening, I encountered a slight low before heading to bed. Thankfully, a few sips of apple juice was all it took to restore balance and set myself up for a restful night. I learned yesterday that going from MDI to a pump means you need around half the correction dose you usually would, this seemed true yesterday and I’ll keep an eye on it going forward!
One of the things I’ve been most excited about is the Omnipod’s ability to keep me stable throughout the night. Positioned on my back (right side, just above my waist), I found it surprisingly comfortable, almost forgetting it was there. I slept soundly, with the pump diligently monitoring and adjusting my insulin levels as needed and woke up in range at 6.9 having not gone above 10 all night! When I woke up I had momentarily forgotten I had it and got quite excited when I remembered… a bit like waking up and realising it’s your birthday (which I get to do on Sunday!).
While initially aware of the presence of the Omnipod 5 on my body, I quickly got used to feeling it there. The lightweight design and seamless integration allows me to move freely so its barely noticeable. The over patches from TypeOne Style are helping with this too.
Based on my first 24 hours with the Omnipod 5, I’m confident that this transition will be a smooth one. The pump’s performance during my evening out and its ability to maintain stability throughout the night have left me optimistic about the future.
